Global Performance Engineer/Naval Architect

Position Type: Full-time, regular employee
Location: Emeryville, California
Education Required: Master’s Degree preferred in relevant field of engineering (e.g., Ocean Engineering, Naval Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, Civil/Structural Engineering, Material Sciences)

General Description

We are looking for a Global Performance Engineer/Naval Architect who is passionate about offshore wind technologies and enjoys the unique challenges of growing business in an emerging industry. The Global Performance Group splits its focus between current designs, for specific site conditions, and R&D to optimize the performance and ultimately the cost of the WindFloats in future projects working toward commercialization of the WindFloat.

You will join Principle Power’s Technology organization, a high-performing and dynamic team that is focused on positioning Principle Power as the global leader in the emerging floating wind sector.

 

       Group Responsibilities

  • Design platform global dimensions based on project specific conditions
  • Global performance analysis including stability and design load case simulation and provide design inputs to other engineering teams (mainly structural engineering group and marine system group)
  • Platform weight management
  • External interface with turbine manufacturers, classification society and clients
  • Internal interface with PM, BD, Technology, and other engineering groups
  • Load out and commissioning support

 

Main Accountabilities:

        Project Execution

  • Collect project requirements relevant to platform global performance
  • Build aerodynamic model of wind turbine based on WTG manufacturers inputs, including turbine controller definition and adjustment
  • Perform aerodynamic model verification with turbine manufacturer
  • Build hydrodynamic and coupled aero-hydro model
  • Perform global performance design and analysis, following proper QAQC process and project schedule
  • Interface with internal/external parties (other engineering teams, PM, BD, client etc.)
  • Write technical report and technical advisory

 

        Research and Internal Process Development

  • Carry out R&D projects for numerical tool improvement, methodology refinement and next generation WindFloat design
  • Develop internal process and procedure on numerical model building, standardized analysis and QAQC process, interface with internal and external parties
  • Paper publication for technical conferences
  • Collect lessons learned from past and current projects, for technical improvements for next projects, witness on site if required

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Master of science or above in a relevant field of engineering (ocean engineering, naval architecture, mechanical engineering, civil/structural engineering, material science, etc.)
  • 2-5 years of professional experience in maritime or wind industry
  • Experience in wind turbine modeling, WTG controller development, or hydrodynamics problem modeling and simulation
  • Strong technical and data analysis skills
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language such as Python or Matlab
  • Detail oriented, organized, proactive and self-motivated
  • Good communication skills both written and oral

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with wind turbine simulation tools such as FAST, OpenFAST, Flex5, or HAWC2
  • Experience with hydrodynamics related numerical tools such as OrcaFlex, Rhinoceros, or Orca3D
  • Strong knowledge of renewable energy/power sector economics and offshore renewables markets
  • Proficiency with financial valuation concepts
  • Familiarity with offshore wind technology
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office software including Excel, PowerPoint, and Word; Familiarity with programming and database systems are advantages
  • Exceptional written communications and presentation skills
  • Languages: Fluent in English required (Principle Power’s working language); Other languages a plus (namely in markets where we are present)
