Position Type: R&D Program Manager
Location: Emeryville, CA
Education Required: Master’s Degree preferred – Bachelor’s in Engineering, Naval Architecture, or related field. Prefer candidates who possess an academic profile with coursework focused on offshore structures, construction, and wind energy.
Position Start: ASAP
As a leader in floating, offshore wind energy, Principle Power is focused on the commercial-scale deployment of floating wind farms. The successful candidate will work on the engineering and design of the next generation of offshore floating wind turbines.
In particular, the candidate will be responsible for managing R&D projects relating to the design of the WindFloat and floating offshore wind farms. The candidate may also manage multiple federally funded research grants around topics relating to Floating Wind.
The successful candidate will interface directly with internal engineering, strategy, and commercial teams to prioritize and execute high importance R&D. The candidate will also manage many external interfaces as they manage federal grant applications and serve as principle technical investigator on grant-based R&D collaborations.
The individual will need to be a self-motivated individual who is able to work independently and take ownership of the multiple R&D workstreams. This role will be highly visible and the ability to influence key stakeholders without direct authority is paramount. This person will report directly to the Vice President of Technology.
Own and deliver on company research and development roadmap.
Interface with project engineering teams to track and prioritize inter-disciplinary company-wide R&D efforts including product and tool development.
Manage engineering sensitivity studies and tool development work scopes leveraging resources from engineering departments.
Coordinate internally with company strategy and commercial teams to build external consortiums for floating wind grant solicitations and manage grants from application stages through project execution for awarded projects through service as principle investigator.
Summarize findings in reports for internal and external digestion. Own the continued development of internal R&D processes.
Represent Principle Power technical program progress internally and externally as needed through industry outreach, conference participation, etc.
Required Professional Experience:
7+ years preferred in fields relating to Offshore Wind, Offshore Oil & Gas, or Maritime industry. Working knowledge of offshore structures and mooring systems preferred. Hydrodynamic and mooring analysis experience preferred.
Experience with aero-hydro-servo and mooring modelling software, such as OrcaFlex, WAMIT, FAST.
Working knowledge of offshore structure fabrication, construction, and installation philosophies preferred.
Some project management experience preferred. Experience with grant applications a plus.
Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Ability to produce clear and well written engineering reports and technical documents in English. Grant writing experience a plus.
Ability to work efficiently in a team environment with other staff members and discipline leads.
Ability to learn in fast-paced environment and deliver high-quality results to co-workers and external partners.
Ability to interface with multiple business units including engineering, strategy, and business.
The individual will have a technical curiosity and love of learning which can translate into actionable items. A “get it done” attitude is a must for this role.
