Position Type: Senior R&D Engineer
Location: Lisbon, Portugal or Aix-en-Provence, France
Education Required: Master’s Degree preferred – Bachelor’s in Engineering, Naval Architecture, or related field. Prefer candidates who possess a profile with experience and coursework focused on offshore structures, oceanography, atmospheric science, and wind energy.
Position Start: ASAP
As a leader in floating, offshore wind energy, Principle Power is focused on the commercial-scale deployment of floating wind farms. The successful candidate will sit in the Technology Group of the organization and work on the engineering and design of the next generation of offshore floating wind turbines.
In particular, the candidate will be responsible for managing three primary work topic areas:
Floating Offshore WindFarm Siting engineering services and tool development
European Floating Wind R&D grant tracking, proposal management, technical study management and engineering support
Processing and analysis of WindFloat asset data for use in engineering model validation and product development workstreams
The successful candidate will interface directly with engineering, strategy, and operations teams to prioritize and execute high importance R&D and engineering services. The candidate will also manage many external interfaces as they manage federal grant applications and serve as principle technical investigator on European grant-based R&D collaborations.
The individual will need to be a self-motivated individual who is able to work independently and take ownership of the multiple R&D and engineering workstreams. This role will be highly visible and the ability to influence key stakeholders without direct authority is paramount. This person will report directly to the Vice President of Technology.
Assist in early-stage project feasibility studies by managing and executing work packages related to assessing site layouts for floating offshore wind plants. This includes acquiring, analyzing, and processing metocean, bathymetric, atmospheric, mooring, and turbine information to model turbine layout options. This includes reporting results such as annual energy production.
Coordinate internally with Technology and Commercial teams to build external consortiums for EU floating wind grant solicitations. Manage grants from application stages through project execution for awarded projects through service as principle technical investigator.
Deliver on workstreams related to the processing and integration of performance data gathered from our deployed WindFloat projects. Manage and execute activities related to the validation of engineering models and performing multi-parameter optimization studies.
Interface with project engineering teams to track and prioritize inter-disciplinary company-wide R&D efforts including product and tool development.
Perform engineering analysis as part of R&D programs.
Manage engineering sensitivity studies and tool development work scopes leveraging resources from engineering departments.
Summarize findings in reports for internal and external digestion. Own the continued development of internal R&D processes.
Represent Principle Power technical program progress internally and externally as needed through industry outreach, conference participation, and business development activities.
Required Professional Experience:
7+ years preferred in fields relating to Offshore Wind, Offshore Oil & Gas, or Maritime industry. Working knowledge of offshore structures and mooring systems preferred. Hydrodynamic and mooring analysis experience preferred.
Experience with aero-hydro-servo and mooring modelling software, such as OrcaFlex, WAMIT, FAST.
Experience in windfarm siting and modeling using in house, proprietary field layout software.
Experience working with large data sets in which data cleaning and processing is required.
Working knowledge of offshore engineering, wind energy assessment, and windfarm development engineering.
Some project management experience preferred. Experience with grant applications a plus.
Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Ability to produce clear and well written engineering reports and technical documents in English. Grant writing experience a plus.
Ability to work efficiently in a team environment with other staff members and discipline leads.
Ability to learn in fast-paced environment and deliver high-quality results to co-workers and external partners.
Ability to interface with multiple business units including engineering, strategy, and business.
The individual will have a technical curiosity and love of learning which can translate into actionable items. A “get it done” attitude is a must for this role.
