Vice President, Business Development

General Description

We are looking for a Vice President, Business Development (VP BD) who is passionate about offshore wind technologies and enjoys the unique challenges of growing business in an emerging industry. You will join Principle Power’s Commercial organization, a high-performing and dynamic team that is focused on positioning Principle Power as the global leader in the emerging floating wind sector.

The VP BD is responsible for leading Principle Power’s global Business Development activities. The position is a member of Principle Power’s executive management team (XMT) and will report to the Chief Commercial Officer (CCO), leading a direct team of 5-6 business developers located in key markets. As part of the central Hub organization located in Lisbon, Portugal the VP BD will work closely with the CCO and other departments to assure smooth coordination between the remotely-sited business developers and the rest of the organization, enabling Principle Power meets the needs of its customers and to stay ahead of the market.

The VP Business Development will be responsible for driving our ambitious growth plans within the emerging floating offshore wind market, growing from ~$10 Million revenue to ~$50 Million per year in the next 3-4 years.


Main Accountabilities

  • Develop and maintain relationships with key customers and other stakeholders in the offshore wind industry (e.g., utilities, developers, policy makers) to position Principle Power for opportunities

  • Provide strategic direction and mentorship to enable a global team of senior business developers to identify and win opportunities, including prioritization and assignment, identification of client/market needs, and development/execution of win strategies

  • Own the Customer Relationship Management (CSM) software to ensure that the Business Development team has solid opportunity tracking to maximize potential business and minimize lost opportunities

  • Provide overarching leadership and management of Principle Power’s sales funnel, including planning and prioritization, preparation of proposals, forecasting, reporting, and participation in go/no-go reviews

  • Collaborate with the CCO and Public Affairs & Marketing groups to define tools and marketing materials that showcase Principle Power’s products/services to support customer engagement and market entry

  • Work closely with the CCO and Strategy/Commercial group to structure and refine Principle Power’s service offerings for new and existing business lines, providing customer/competitor insights to improve value to Clients and our competitive advantage

  • Develop and maintain efficient processes between and amongst the business development, commercial, and engineering disciplines to ensure competitive, robust proposals and seamless handovers

  • Represent the company, contribute to thought leadership, and advocate for strategic priorities through presentations and workshops (webinars, conferences, meetings, and other relevant events)

  • Work with the CCO and the Legal department to structure and negotiate MOU’s, partnerships, and other commercial agreements

  • Other activities as needed in related disciplines


Required Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree; Masters or MBA preferred


Required Professional Experience:

  • 10 + years proven experience in BD, Sales, Development, Consulting, or similar

  • Proven experience in business development and sales

  • Experience with technology focused companies and comfort in project environments

  • Experience with offshore energy/offshore wind will be viewed favorably

  • Background/competencies in technical fields such as offshore engineering, naval architecture and/or offshore wind project development/delivery will be viewed favorably


Required Knowledge:

  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office software (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) and CRM software

  • Commercial acumen and experience negotiating complex transactions

  • Exceptional written communications and presentation skills

  • Familiarity with project development timelines, internal/external risks, decision gates, and other customer/project decision criteria

  • Languages: Fluent in English required (Principle Power’s working language); Other languages a plus (namely in markets where we are present)

  • Ability to work across cultures and in different geographies

  • Comfort distilling complex technical concepts to audiences with various degrees of sophistication

  • Background/competencies in technical fields such as offshore engineering, naval architecture and/or offshore wind project development/delivery will be viewed favorably

  • Strong organizational and time management skills, ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment

  • Ability to travel 30% + (assuming return to normal in post-Covid-19 environment)

  • Authorization to work in Portugal

  • Compliant with, and advocate for, Principle Power’s Business Ethics and HSE policies

  • Willingness to bridge the time gap between US and Europe or Europe and Asia as may be required.
